OUR GRANDFATHER'S SECRETS
A Play by Dr. Martha J. Smith, ©Copyright 2016
Shlomi, a Jewish boy and Gheorghe, a Roma boy, are good friends living in Romania. They discuss the matter of tattooed numbers which they have discovered on the arms of their grandfathers. No one in their respective families will explain why the numbers are there. They decide to find time alone with the grandfathers to ask what this means. The grandfathers decide to share their stories with the boys and the tragedy of the Jewish and Roma Holocausts in Romania pours forth. Through flashbacks into the past—the Iasi pogrom, the Bucharest Legionnaires pogrom, the deportation of the Roma to Transnistria where thousands died under extreme conditions and, eventually internment in Auschwitz— all come to reality.
